Sometimes all the elements line up just right, and the result is a storm of Biblical proportions. Just as hurricane winds and rain are beginning to lash Tampa, site of the Republican national convention, a perfect political storm of epic proportions is about to break over America.
On one side we have a rich white man, born into privilege leading an almost wholly white party that opposes immigration, abortion and gay rights and doubts that the president was born in this country. On the other side we have the Black sitting president with working class roots who has widespread support among all ethnic groups, and who is a champion of gay rights and women’s liberation. One side is looking to a quickly vanishing past, that perhaps never really was, and the other is envisioning a future which, thanks to the brewing storm, we may never attain.
Yes, in Tampa they are battening down the hatches against the relentless forces of nature, but they are also facing an implacable tide of fundamental social change. Tampa is the Republicans’ Alamo. They are girding for an epic battle. They will say and do anything to rally their dwindling, desperate base for the final showdown. And the other side, smelling what seems certain victory, is not pulling any punches. What happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object? Between now and November we are likely to find out. . .
